Today, LeBron James has announced that he has declined his $35.6M option and will become an unrestricted free agent according to Shams Charania, NBA Insider for Yahoo Sports. There has been a lot of buzz going around about the Lakers being a possible destination for James. With James now being an unrestricted free agent, he can go wherever he pleases and you can bet the Lakers front office will try to convince him to land in Hollywood. The Lakers do have the cap space to sign LeBron and another max free agent. Reports are that the Lakers will try to go after Paul George and rumors of a Kawhi trade have been going on for a couple of days now. There have been a lot of questions about LeBron and whether or not he’s willing to come to Los Angeles on his own. Cleveland is still certainly in the mix as he can opt to sign with them again and possibly do a one year deal if he sees that L.A. may not be a viable option. There’s also the dark horse in the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers would have to make a few moves and have the cap space needed to lure LeBron to complete “the process” in Philly.

As of now, the Lakers chances seem to be favorable according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN. The Rockets could also be out of the running since James has decided to opt out. It could come down to just Cleveland and Los Angeles. Buckle your seat belts ladies and gentleman. It’s going to be one heck of a free agency.
LeBron James has informed the Cavs he won’t opt into his contract. This decision is favorable to the Lakers chances, hurts the Rockets chances and the Cavs remain firmly in mix.
