According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, the Los Angeles Lakers are planning to sign Gary Payton II to a two-way NBA contract. Payton II was a standout at Oregon State University where he played his college ball. Payton II was undrafted in 2016 and last played for the Milwaukee Bucks. He’s also played in the G-League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Wisconsin Herd. In his brief stint with the Bucks, he averaged 2.8 ppg, 1.2 apg, and shot 38% from the field. Recently the Lakers waived Vander Blue and opened up a spot for another two-way player. The Lakers will take a look at Payton II to see if he can provide some minutes at the back-up point guard position. Lonzo Ball has a mild left knee sprain in which he may miss some games, so adding some depth is priority.
The Lakers play the Grizzlies tonight, and Payton II will join the team. Currently the Lakers are on a 4-game winning streak and hope to continue that tonight possibly without the services of Lonzo Ball/Brandon Ingram.
